Saddle guide

Buying a saddle with free advice

This is how you find the right saddle for you and your horse. Finding the right saddle online does not have to be a risk. With the right advice, the wide selection becomes a clear decision for a saddle that suits horse, rider and intended use. We guide you step by step: from the selection to assessing the fit, right through to the chance to try it. So you do not simply buy any saddle, you make a confident, well-founded decision for you and your horse.

Which saddle suits your horse?

Which saddle suits your horse always depends on horse, rider and intended use. So that we can recommend the right saddle for you, we look above all at your horse's back, withers, shoulder freedom, back length and musculature, and of course at whether you ride dressage, jumping, eventing or leisure.

How do I tell whether a saddle fits?

  1. 1The saddle tree:The saddle must not press, slip or block the shoulder.
  2. 2Seat comfort for you as the rider:You should sit securely, balanced and comfortably.
  3. 3Correct gullet width:It has to suit your horse's withers and shoulder.
  4. 4Suitable saddle length:The saddle must not be too long for the horse's back.
  5. 5Balance point of the saddle:The saddle has to sit at the balance point so the weight is spread evenly and the horse can move freely.

Determining the saddle size, step by step

The right saddle size always depends on horse and rider. What matters most is the seat size for the rider and the fit for the horse's back. For the rider, the saddle size is given in inches:*

RiderSaddle size
Children / teenagers, very slim riders15”-16”
Ladies XS-S16,5”-17”
Ladies M / Men S17”-17,5”
Ladies L / Men M-L17,5”-18”
Tall or heavier riders18”-18,5”

* The seat sizes serve as a guide and can vary depending on build and saddle model.

More about buying a saddle & the advice

Buying a saddle online: why advice matters so much

No two horse backs are the same, and every rider brings different conditions too. Withers, shoulder position, back line, musculature and level of training play just as much of a role as the feel in the seat, the discipline and personal preferences.

Anyone who chooses a saddle only by brand, seat size or price quickly overlooks important details. This is exactly where our online advice helps: we look in a structured way at horse, rider and intended use and sensibly narrow down the suitable models.

This is especially important when the current saddle causes problems, for example it slips, tips, creates pressure or your horse reacts sensitively when being saddled. Then it is not just about a different model, but about the right fit, balance and contact.

This makes buying a saddle online clearer, safer and better matched to the two of you.

Buying a saddle online: how the advice works

Before a saddle is chosen, it first comes down to the most important basics: your horse, your seat and your everyday riding. Back shape, withers, musculature, level of training, discipline and previous saddle experience show which requirements a suitable saddle has to meet.

Based on your details, photos and measurements we can sensibly narrow down the selection. That way only models that really suit horse, rider and intended use come into question.

After that comes the specific selection for a fitting or trial period. You gain more orientation, avoid unnecessary bad buys and can make your decision with a much better feeling.

This makes buying a saddle online simple, easy to follow and personally supported.

What really matters in saddle advice

Choosing a saddle is about more than seat size, brand or price. What is decisive is how horse and rider fit together: back shape, withers, shoulder freedom, musculature and level of training determine which saddle shape can even be considered.

How it is used also plays a big role. A dressage saddle has to meet different requirements than a jumping saddle or a versatile model. Depending on whether fine aids, freedom of movement or a secure seat are the priority, the right choice changes.

The rider themselves is just as important. Feel in the seat, proportions and preferred position influence whether a saddle really works in the long run. Because a saddle can seem to fit the horse and still not give the rider a stable, balanced seat.

Good advice brings these points together and helps to narrow down the selection sensibly, so the saddle is not just bought but really suits the two of you.

New or used saddle, which is better?

A used saddle can be a sensible, high-quality solution when condition, fit and adjustment options are right. With good brand models in particular, buying used is often attractive. It is important, however, to look closely: not every saddle can still be altered to fit or is in a technical condition that convinces over the long term.

A new saddle, on the other hand, offers more options for equipment, adjustment and later fitting. That can be especially helpful when your horse is still developing, the musculature is changing or you have very specific wishes for the feel and the model.

Which option suits better therefore does not depend on budget alone. What is decisive is whether the saddle suits horse, rider and intended use, and whether it can also be sensibly adjusted over the long term.

Our advice helps you to assess both options realistically. So you do not simply find the cheapest or newest saddle, but the solution that really suits the two of you.

Try it free for 30 days

Whether a saddle really fits does not show while standing still, but while riding. Only when riding does it become visible whether it lies quietly, allows the horse's movement and gives the rider a good, stable feel in the seat.

A 30-day free trial period helps to judge the saddle in everyday use. Does the horse move more freely? Does the saddle stay in balance? Does the seat still feel right even after several sessions? Exactly these experiences make the decision safer.

Typical mistakes when buying a saddle online

A common mistake when buying a saddle online is relying too much on brand, seat size or price. These points are important, but they say little about whether a saddle really suits horse and rider.

Photos and measurements are also often underestimated. Blurry pictures, awkward angles or missing information about the back, withers and level of training can mean that a genuinely suitable model is not even considered, or that an unsuitable saddle is chosen too quickly.

Another mistake is only looking for a "more comfortable" saddle without checking the cause of existing problems. When a saddle slips, tips, creates pressure or the horse reacts sensitively, the fit should be examined closely.

It is equally important to take the trial period seriously. Whether a saddle really works often only shows in movement and after several riding sessions. That is why buying online should not be understood as a quick click, but as a guided process with selection, review and possible adjustment.

With our free advice, many of these mistakes can be avoided, and the decision becomes considerably safer.

Who benefits from online saddle advice?

Online saddle advice is worthwhile for anyone who wants more confidence when buying a saddle. It is especially helpful when you are not sure which models suit your horse or what to watch out for regarding fit, feel in the seat and intended use.

For horses with special requirements, advice can also bring a lot of clarity, for example with a short back, high withers, a broad shoulder, sensitive musculature or a horse still developing. Here it is often not enough to decide simply by seat size or brand.

Online advice is just as sensible when the current saddle causes problems: it slips, tips, presses, lies unsteadily or your horse reacts sensitively when being saddled or ridden. Then a structured assessment helps to better identify the cause and find suitable alternatives.

Riders who want to buy a new or used saddle online also benefit from the advice. They get a targeted preselection, save time and avoid bad buys.

In short: online advice is always worthwhile when the saddle should not just be ordered, but really chosen to fit.

When should I have the saddle adjusted?

Whenever the horse, the saddle or the riding feel changes. Especially with:

  • Muscle build-up or weight change
  • Growth or a training break
  • Slipping, tipping or pressure points
  • a sensitive back or dissatisfaction while riding

Our tip: have the saddle checked at least 2 to 3 times a year so your horse stays healthy and moves freely.
